Tips on Working from a Home Office

If you work from home and decide to have an office in the garden, here are a few tips ...

Working from Home in a Garden Office or Studio
  • When you have a converted shed rather than a purpose built garden office, use a laptop computer. You can take it down to your garden office to do your work and then bring it back to the house when you've finished so you don't have to worry about security.
  • Keep paperwork in file, so it is easy to o move inside at the end of the working day. If you leave things in a garden shed in winter they will get damp unless the heating is kept on at night.
  • There are time when you need thinking space. If you are in a creative kind of job it's a good idea to have a little seating area outside your garden studio where you can escape to find inspiration.
  • Try to keep your thinking area in a different part of the garden from the office. Somewhere you do not have piles of of paperwork stacked up all around you. Put your garden office far enough away from the house so you are not rushing in to answer the doorbell.
  • Do not fall into the trap of taking your mobile phone with you down to your garden room if you want peace and quiet. Of course a mobile phone is essential if you actually want to conduct business from your garden office, however it may be better to consider having a landline installed in your garden office instead.
  • Choose the sort of seating an table you can leave out in the garden all year. You do not want to be moving the garden furniture in and out.
