"It was never a difficult decision to work from home. Having
spent several years in the Midlands working as a postman,
the thought of not rising to the alarm clock at 4.30 am every
morning was more than appealing to me.
I've worked as a graphic designer and illustrator in my studio
for more than fifteen years. The studio - I use that term
loosely - is in fact just a spare upstairs room in my modest
cottage situated in the hills of Mid-Wales. Admittedly, I
share it with my vacuum cleaner and ironing board but it highlights
how little space you actually need to set up a business.
When I first started out, even though the majority of my
work was done from home there was still a need to travel to
use the post office, photocopiers, scanners etc. However with
the advancement and affordability of technology I now have
all the equipment I need which takes up a very small footprint.
It's true you do have to possess a degree of self discipline
to work from home. A late start is a sure way to guarantee
a late finish; but then again it may be your preference to
work later in the day and home working certainly gives you
the freedom to do this. I feel without the distractions and
office gossip I can better focus, improving my productivity.
I'm fortunate to really enjoy what I do which means I can
sometimes lose track of time and work in to the evening; but
on the same token I can choose my hours and fit them into
my life allowing me to enjoy the 'work to live' ethos as oppose
to 'live to work'.
So apart from the obvious cost effectiveness and convenience,
I consider myself privileged to work from my home; and once
the obligatory mug of coffee has been made and radio 4 has
been tuned in I really am in my element."
